Esther performs Glazunov’s Violin Concerto in A minor at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw with the Philharmonie Zuidnederland led by conductor Duncan Ward. Recorded live on September 3, 2023.
For Esther, composer Max Bruch was a major influence during her formative years as a musician. On her new Deutsche Grammophon album, Yoo joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Vasily Petrenko for Bruch’s Adagio Appassionato, Op. 57 for Violin and Orchestra, which was written for acclaimed Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim and is considered to be one of the composer’s best works.
“This album feels like a beautiful melting pot of my past and present in terms of relationships, repertoire and the journey of finding my own voice.” says Yoo.
For Esther, Henri Vieuxtemps’ Souvenir d’Amerique, Op.17 “Yankee Doodle” elicits early childhood memories of singing the ‘Yankee Doodle’ tune on car rides with her Father when they lived in the U.S. On her new Deutsche Grammophon release, she is joined by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director Vasily Petrenko for this work along with Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26, and Adagio Appassionato, Op. 57 …

Esther Yoo fell in love with Samuel Barber’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 14, in her early 20s, around the same time she was named the inaugural Artist-in-Residence of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. On her new Deutsche Grammophon album, she joins the RPO for a performance of the Barber Concerto with new Music Director Vasily Petrenko.
Esther discusses the significance of Bruch’s beloved concerto in her own development as an artist. The concerto is featured on her 2023 Deutsche Grammophon album, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
